The Hope Cabo Verde Foundation has long been offering schoolchildren a friendly environment to spend time between the end of school and when their parents can collect them. Thanks to the outstanding success of this initiative, we have decided to officially announce and expand the programme. We call it “Družina” [pronounced “druzhina”]. This Czech word signifies a team, group, community, or sense of belonging. In the Czech Republic, the history of družinas dates back centuries. Read more about them below.
Cape Verdean children have taken a great liking to our “Družina.” Here, they can study, complete homework, play, draw, chat, and most importantly, enjoy being together in a safe and friendly environment.
Recently, a little boy appeared at our door, and unfortunately, we had to tell him: “We’re so sorry, but we don’t have a chair for you. You’ll have to try another time.” The very next day, after school, he was back at our door. “But we told you yesterday…”
“Yes, but now I’ve got a chair!” he exclaimed joyfully. Behind him was a man—perhaps his grandfather or uncle—carrying a chair for him.
The children naturally talk among themselves about how much they enjoy our “Družina.”
Since the school system does not support this kind of care for children, the Hope Foundation is striving to create a welcoming space for them until their parents can take over. At the same time, we are promoting social inclusion, creativity, and academic achievement among the children.
Your support for this project would mean so much to us. To help, simply include the keyword “Družina” in the payment reference, and the funds will go directly towards this programme. We deeply appreciate any support you can offer.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

In the Czech Republic, school družinas provide care and supervision for children outside of school hours. Children spend their time here after school engaging in various activities such as games, sports, creative projects, or completing their homework. The primary goal is to offer children a safe and enjoyable environment.
The first družinas were established in the 19th century. In Czechoslovakia, they saw a revival after the Second World War and became an integral part of the school system. Their funding has evolved over time—from being largely publicly funded to today’s mixed model, which combines public funding, parental contributions, and sometimes sponsorships.
School družinas benefit both parents and children. Parents gain peace of mind knowing their children are safe, which helps them better balance work and family life. Meanwhile, children develop their social skills, creativity, and independence while also having space to relax and have fun.
